Canadas Growing Autonomy – Sociology Essay Free Online Research Papers Canadas Growing Autonomy Sociology Essay The twentieth century was a turning point in Canadian history as Canada went through many changes, including economic, and population growths. Today Canada has a position in the world as one of the middle powers. This was achieved by great progress on many fields during the twentieth century. The three most prominent events during the twentieth century which have helped Canada slowly drift away from Great Britain are the King-Byng affair in 1926, the Statute of Westminster in 1931, and finally the creation of Canada’s own flag, in 1965. In the twentieth century, Canada has grown increasingly autonomous from the United Kingdom. In 1926, the King-Byng affair was a great step forward in Canada’s independence from Britain. It all began when Prime Minister Mackenzie King asked the governor general, William Byng, to dissolve parliament and call a general election, where he refused (Wales). As a result of Byng’s refusal, King ensured that, once back in power, he would strip certain powers from the governor general. This would make Canada more independent from the Queen and Britain. This event has changed the way the job of the governor general has been carried out throughout the twentieth century (Wales). After this event Canada could freely pass laws and bills, without fear of intervention by the governor general. As King said after the affair, â€Å"It is a complete control by an individual† about Byng (The National). This showed the kind of power the governor general had before this event, where as now he/she must accept the laws given to be signed. The King-Byng affair is one major event where Canada has moved forward in its independence from Great Britain because Byng refused to call an election, it changed the job of the governor general, and it reduced the amount of power this job has. The statute of Westminster, in 1931, was another step forward in Canada’s autonomy from Britain. This statute removed some restricting acts from the past which restricted Canada’s independence including the Colonial Laws Validity Act of 1865 (Wales). This meant that Canada did not have to follow all the British laws created in Britain. This gave Canada more freedom and independence. As stated in the statute: â€Å"No Act of Parliament of the United Kingdom passed after the commencement of this Act shall extend or be deemed to extend, to a Dominion as part of the law of that Dominion, unless it is expressly declared in that Act that Dominion has requested, and consented to, the enactment thereof.† (Wales) This gave Canada the privileges to not follow all the same rules as the United Kingdom giving Canada more independence. This document gave all former dominions of the United Kingdom equal independence from the UK (Hallowell, 598). All former dominions had equal i ndependence because they could now freely create their own laws without the UK looking over their shoulder throughout the whole process. The statute of Westminster has helped Canada’s independence come a long way because it removed binding acts from the past, gave way for Canada to create their own laws, and gave all former dominions equal independence as the UK. When Canada created their own flag in 1965 they furthered their independence than ever before. The old flag, the Union Jack showed great ties with the United Kingdom because it had a strong bond with the UK (Wales). After the flag was created, the strong bond between the UK and Canada in their flags was broken and Canada was able to use and display their own flag. With the creation of the new flag Canada had their own flag to fly at international events (Wales). With the new flag Canada showed their independence from the UK in international events, such as the Olympics where Canada was respected for their own flag. Canada now had an original symbol to represent their country (Halowell, 428). The maple leaf is now Canada’s symbol which shows great autonomy from England because they are thought of being their own country without any affiliation with the UK. Canada’s new flag was a great step forward in Canadian independence from the UK because strong ties in the union jac k was demolished, it gave Canada something to be represented by, and Canada become known as its own country instead of a country with a back bone in England. Canada has grown increasingly independent from the UK throughout the twentieth century. Canada’s growing autonomy has been shown through the three important events discussed above: which are the creation of Canada’s flag in 1965, the Statute of Westminster in 1931, and finally the King-Byng affair in 1926. Canada should be greatly accredited for its increasing autonomy but on the other hand this process has been very slow. In addition, Canada still has many ties to the UK, which must be removed permanently for Canada to become its own independent country, with no backbone support by England. The History of Dr Pepper and inventor Charles Alderton In 1885, in Waco, Texas, a young Brooklyn-born pharmacist named Charles Alderton invented a new soft drink that would soon become known as Dr Pepper. The carbonated beverage was marketed as having a unique flavor all its own. More than 130 years later, the brand can still be found on shelves and in refrigerated store coolers worldwide. Alderton worked at Morrisons Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, Texas, where carbonated drinks were served at the soda fountain. While there, he began experimenting with his own soft drink recipes. One, in particular, was fast becoming a big hit with customers, who originally ordered the concoction by asking Alderton to shoot them a Waco. As the soft drinks popularity grew, Alderton and Morrison had trouble manufacturing enough Dr Pepper to keep up with the demand for the product. Robert S. Lazenby, owner of the Circle A Ginger Ale Company in Waco, had been impressed with Dr Pepper and was interested in manufacturing, bottling, and distributing the soft drink. Boyle’s short story â€Å"Greasy Lake† are the same type of events that in an instant will change a person forever. The ironic circumstances that the narrator in â€Å"Greasy Lake† finds himself in are the same circumstances that young people find themselves in when fighting war. The viewpoint of the world that the narrator has, completely alters as certain events take place throughout the story. His outlook on nature transforms into a wholly different standpoint as the story progresses. As his tale begins, the narrator sees himself as a tough guy or â€Å"bad character†. He believes he is invincible. There is nobody as cool as he is or as dangerous as him and his friends are. With his followers, the narrator goes to Greasy Lake, he takes in the nature that surrounds him. He thinks of himself to be a kid who knows everything. To him, the lake represents a night of misbehavior and partying. The unhealthy, treacherous atmosphere of Greasy Lake is alluring, fun, and exciting to someone as threatening as he is. â€Å"We went up to the lake because everyone went there, because we wanted to snuff the rich sent of possibility on the breeze, watch a girl take off her clothes and plunge into the festering murk, drink beer, smoke pot, howl at the stars, sa vor the incongruous full-throated roar of rock and roll against the primeval susurrus of frogs and crickets. This was nature.† This quote gives a clear idea of what the narrators perception of what not only nature is, but of what the world is. He lives to have fun. He is fearless and lives for the moment. All that life is to him is sex, drugs, and rock and roll. His observations of surrounding nature changes after a few ironic incidents occur. The role he plays reverses itself and he finds that he is merely a scared child who is lost and alone in a big scary world. While at Greasy Lake, he is involved in a terrible fight where he almost kills another person, and attempts the heinous crime of rape onto an innocent girl. As he begins to gang rape an innocent victim he is forced to run for his own safety when more people show up at the scene. Ironically, within minutes he converts from being the bad guy, forcing himself on an unwilling victim, to becoming a scared kid hiding in the woods from attackers. While... ...but scared children who are alone and lost in the world, the kids who fought battle in Vietnam went to war thinking they knew all of the answers and somewhere in the middle of it all they realized that they are scared kids who don’t understand what is going on the world around them. They wish only to be in the safety of their mothers home. Everything in the story symbolizes and relates to the truth in war, attitude and actions that cause war are the same that take place with the characters inGreasy lake. The changes that the narrator goes through at Greasy lake are similar changes that happened in young kids who fought in the Vietnam War. The sequence of events that take place at Greasy Lake cause the narrator to grow up and see reality for the first time in his life. The young nineteen year olds who fought in Vietnam went through the same metamorphose as the narrator in Greasy Lake did, War is started by plain stupidity and you figure it out when it’s too late and there is nothing that can be done to change your actions. The two poems that will be compared both concern the topic of old age, but each has it’s own interpretation on the subject. The first, â€Å"Warning† by Jenny Joseph, is about a woman who wishes to live her life recklessly, instead of aging stereotypically. The second poem, â€Å"Old Man, Old Man† by U.A. Fanthorpe, expresses the effects of how old age can dramatically change a person’s perspective of their own life. Both poems concern the topic of old age, but after just a single reading of each it is clear that the tone differs tremendously. This is possibly where the most obvious observation can be made when considering the poems. â€Å"Warning† has a distinctive spirited feeling about it, where as â€Å"Old Man, Old Man† is able to convey the feelings of sorrow and remorse felt by the person concerned, with ease. This is an important aspect of any poem, and is a useful tool to assist a poem in its direction. Another important aspect of each of these poems is the actual topic of old age, and how it is perceived by the person in question. During â€Å"Warning†, old age is thought of as a rather mundane event for a person that signals the end of a life, and allows the person to fade away. This is also very much the case in â€Å"Old Man, Old Man† because of its tone, which is more sorrowful than in â€Å"Warning†, which portrays that the sarcastic stereotypical attitude shown in the third stanza of â€Å"warning† is actually a reality for some people. This is where the subject of each of the poems can be clearly seen. â€Å"Old Man, Old Man† is about a man that old age has crept upon, and has produced an unrecognisable person who is quite different from his original character. Past â€Å"Lord once of shed, garage and garden† Present â€Å"I’ve lost my hammer.† The above quotes provide reasonable evidence supporting this idea, as they represent how the man in the poem went from king of his domain- to something quite unrecognisable. However, the woman concerned in the poem â€Å"Warning†, shows a great will to change from her present character into what can only be described as a second childhood. It tells us that she is not only willing to become a different person, but that she is willing to attempt to stray away from the stereotypical view of old age. â€Å"And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves, And satin sandals, and say we’ve no money for butter.† It’s not just the tone that adds effect to the poems, but the titles also give us further insight into the poems they belong to. In the title Old Man, Old Man, the repetition of old man emphasises the man’s age, and the title’s repetition within the poem allows us to see that this aspect is quite important. Repetition is used throughout the poem, trying to show us that things such as his missing hammer and that he is unable to find his way to Drury Lane are important to the man in question. They also tell us that he is no longer as independent as he used to be. â€Å"I can see you, you said to me, but only as a cloud.† This comment within the poem explains to the narrator (who is possibly one of the man’s children) that the old man acknowledges that they are there, but becomes unaware of them. If we carry on through the final stanzas, we can see that the narrator wishes to assist the old man, but only as a cloud. This means that the old man can receive aid without losing his independence. The previous idea placed before the last quote can be supported as can this idea of having lost independence, without adding ridicule: â€Å"Let me find your hammer, let me walk with you to Drury lane. I am only a cloud.† â€Å"Warning’s† title, however, is slightly less obvious, but if it is analysed it can clearly be seen that the poem is not a warning for old age, but of being stereotypical, as this is exactly what the women doesn’t want to be. Repetition is also used within â€Å"Warning†, but not to the extent that it was used by â€Å"Old Man, Old Man†. It is used here not only for effect, but to emphasise things that the writer perhaps feels is important and should be taken into consideration. A good example of this during â€Å"Warning† can be found on the first and last lines, First line: â€Å"When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple.† Last line: â€Å"When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.† In this context, it shows us that old age will only be realized when she starts doing the things she planned upon doing as an elderly person. This is similar to â€Å"Old Man, Old Man† because within the poem, is a similar realization of old age. The poems mixture of tenses allows us to see this analysis of the aging process; this mainly refers to â€Å"Old Man, Old Man† but does occur during â€Å"Warning†. From reading the two poems, I have realised that old age makes a great impact on a person’s life, and it is up to them as to how they spend that time. Both â€Å"Old Man, Old Man† by U.A. Fanthorpe and â€Å"Warning† by Jenny Joseph contain different interpretations of old age from different perspectives. â€Å"Old Man, Old Man† could be seen as the stereotypical form of old age mentioned in â€Å"Warning†, and shows us that the woman doesn’t wish to be anything like the man, even though she probably knows that’s what she will be. This realization of old age is one thing that each of the poems has in common, although it is an experience in one, and an anticipation in another. Perhaps the poems are related to their writers, and consist of memories or feelings that they’ve had towards a relation (in the case of â€Å"Old Man, Old Man†) or even themselves (â€Å"Warning†). Each of the poems express similar use of different tenses, as do they use repetition to effect key sections, which adds depth. The titles of each of the poems also accomplish this, and are important because they set the tone for the poems. Although the content and tone of each of the poems is drastically different, it can be seen that they are really quite similar in the way they explain their opinions and views of old age, and their concerns when considering the topic. Each leads to a convincing perception of old age and a valid interpretation of their lives from that point onwards.
